POSITION TITLE: Dental HygienistREPORTS TO: Dental DirectorSUPERVISES: NonePOSITION STATUS: Non-ExemptBENEFITS: Full benefits per HandbookPOSITION SUMMARY:Under general and direct supervision, to assist dentists in providing oral health care to patients; to develop and conduct an educational preventive oral health program for patients; to take digital dental radiographs.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (will include, but not be limited to)

  • Maintain a current Dental Hygiene License, including participating in Continuing Education Courses.
  • Per Dental Board of California Section 1088 and 1910, perform the following RDH duties under general supervision:
    • Periodontal charting;
    • Oral prophylaxis;
    • Scaling and Root Planing;
    • Intra and Extraoral examination of soft tissue; Application of topical, therapeutic, and subgingival agents used for the control of caries and periodontal disease (including fluoride)
    • Application of non-aerosol and non-caustic topical agents;
    • Pit and fissure sealants;
    • Irrigate sub-gingivally with an antimicrobial and/or antibiotic liquid solution(s).
    • Polish and contour restorations;
    • Oral exfoliative cytology.3. Per the Dental Board of California Section 1909, perform the following RDH duties under direct supervision.
      • Periodontal soft tissue curettage;
      • Administration of local anesthesia;
      • Placement of antimicrobial or antibiotic medications which do not later have to be removed;
        • Understanding of Insurance Coverage as follows.
          • General knowledge of Direct Care, CHS, and SHCF coverage (with training provided by TMWIHC staff); General knowledge of Medi-Cal and CMSP coverage;
          • General knowledge of Private Insurance coverage and pre-authorization requirements;
          • Understanding that an individual's insurance coverage does not change the recommended treatment
            • Be familiar with the aims and objectives of the Health Center and express a genuine enthusiasm for its success.
            • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
            • The ability to appropriately and professionally interact with and to get along well with others is an essential function of this position.
            • Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS:
              • Must have a current, valid Dental Hygienist license issued by the California Dental Board
              • One-year of prior work experience, preferably in a clinic setting.
              • Must possess and maintain valid CPR certification.
              • Must possess periodontal soft tissue curettage certification.
              • Must have the ability to work in an independent and self-directed manner and assume individual initiative. Must be willing and have the ability to accept supervision and to follow directions.
              • Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and the ability to follow oral and written instructions. Must possess sufficient written and verbal communication skills to be able to interact with medical professionals, vendors, and agencies in a professional manner, developing rapport and enhancing business relationships. Must have legible handwriting.
              • Experience with and the ability to operate Microsoft Office software is required. Experience working with the Dentrix and RPMS computer systems is preferred. Must possess skill in using computers and other office equipment; in composing correspondence; managing filing systems; gathering and summarizing information; and in planning, organizing, prioritizing, and executing complicated and continuing assignments. Must have the ability to correctly enter information and narratives in the electronic health record system.
              • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact. Must have a general knowledge of and the ability to maintain HIPAA privacy requirements. Must sign a confidentiality statement.
              • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
              • Must maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
              • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation.
                This position requires walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing step-stools, etc., stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching; pushing, pulling and lifting up to 30 pounds; raising objects overhead; manual dexterity for operation of computer, phones and small office machines; hearing, talking and good verbal and written communication skills; repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers.
                All positions require sensitivity to Indian traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs, and ability at times to meet and deal effectively with numerous tribes and varied cultures, which requires tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature.
                Preference in filling vacancies will be given to qualified Native American or Alaskan Native Applicants, in accordance with the Indian preference Act (Title 25, U.S. Code Section 472 and 473) and Public Law 93-638, provided the applicant has submitted appropriate verification of Indian preference for employment.
