                    Position Summary:
                    Reporting to the Director of Patient Care Services and the Pediatric Department Manager, the Shift Manager utilizes the nursing process and organizational/leadership skills to coordinate services of staff to patients during the designated shift. -Assures patient care is appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served. -Assesses staff need for the unit, collaborates with the staffing coordinator, Nurse Director, Pediatric Department Manager, and Administrative Nursing Supervisor to ensure patients needs are met. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
                    Position Accountabilities:1. Determines staffing requirements to assure safe and competent patient care. -Considers patient acuity, age specific needs of patients, staff skill mix, and individual patient's plan of care when making assignments. -Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in volume, emergencies, staffing, or schedule changes. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -2. Assists the Pediatric Department Director with employee evaluations and performance management. -Utilizes observation techniques, chart review, and patient interviews to evaluate staff nurse performance and quality of patient care delivered. -Assists employees to improve/maintain performance by establishing goals with measurable performance outcomes, action plans, and time frames. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -3. Assists the Pediatric Department Director in developing unit goals and plans for evaluating and achieving those initiatives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -4. Assists Director with schedules, time and attendance, quality improvement projects, reports, documents, and files. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -5. Demonstrates basic understanding of budget requirements. -Maintains supplies and productivity within guidelines. -Develops strategies to effectively utilize "down time" on designated shift. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -6. Seeks and accepts responsibility for committee participation, special projects, and teaching presentations. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -7. Initiates and facilitates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -8. Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient's functional and developmental age. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -10. Demonstrates the ability to provide appropriate interventions in-patient care emergencies and follows established emergency procedures. -Takes appropriate action in emergency situations and develops others' ability to do so. -Assists staff in prioritizing, as needed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -11. Performs duties in a manner that provides for the psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient and family. -Completes all assessments in a timely manner interpreting the neonate, infant, pediatric and adolescent's behavior with an understanding of the physical, emotional, and chronological maturation process. -Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings. -Incorporates age-specific considerations, such as functional and developmental age, into the care of the neonate (0 to 30 days), infant (31 days to 1 year), pediatric (1 to 12 year), and adolescent (13-17 years) and when providing care, performing procedures, or providing comfort. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -14. Provides appropriate nursing interventions to include, but not limited to: (1) growth and development assessment, (2) gavage and NG feedings, (3) IV placement, and (4) assisting physicians with procedures as required. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -18. Identifies patient family educational needs. -Demonstrates individualized teaching that considers the functional/ developmental age and needs of the neonate, infant, pediatric and adolescent patient. -Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of teaching by assessing comprehension and/or return demonstration by the patient family. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -19. Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergencies and follows established emergency procedures and practices. -Recognizes and responds appropriately to neonatal distress. -Assists physician with resuscitation. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -20. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for departmental/hospital clinical performance improvement initiatives by utilizing appropriate communication channels (i.e. through shift supervisor, director, or committee representatives) and implementing committee-approved. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -21.
