Job Summary:
Under limited supervision, maintain exhibits and other elements of the visitor experience throughout the public facing areas of the Aquarium. Work with creative-development teams to design, test and build exhibit elements while advocating for the quality of the visitor experience and ease of maintenance. Perform cabinetmaking work, light construction, interactive exhibit construction, installation care and maintenance, and parts acquisition, along with heavy materials handling, warehouse inventory care and maintenance. Lead on mechanical repair where components may need to be manufactured on specialized equipment. Perform other duties as required.
Core Activities:
Perform daily maintenance rounds onsite.
Document and report maintenance items to maintain accurate maintenance records and support ongoing maintenance. Submit work requests to other Divisions/Departments related to maintenance and repair needs.
Design parts and pieces to assist in the realization of mechanical and static exhibit items.
Fabricate and test samples and prototypes of mechanical and static exhibit items.
Construct iterations of mechanical and static exhibit items leading to exhibit ready installation.
Participate in drawing reviews with feasibility and maintenance assessments (focusing on materials, maintenance, and production methods).
Identify tool needs and make recommendations for acquisition. Manage storage, security and condition of tools, manage software licenses (identify subscription dates), manage periodic maintenance of complex machinery through licensed providers.
Operate the CNC (create files, run the machine, and manage materials).
Document and store records that contribute to as-built documentation, operations and maintenance manuals.
Identify possible vendors, submit drawings/proposals for quote, submit approved quotes for contract, arrange for samples and prototypes, schedule work and delivery dates, perform quality assurance checks upon delivery/completion (e.g., metalwork, materials, specialty finishes, flooring, carpet, exhibit lighting, etc.).
Maintain artwork and artifact storage, inventory, and maintenance.
Perform various other duties as assigned by the Manager of Exhibit Production and Maintenance.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Able to work quickly, exercise good judgement, create good solutions for problems
Team player with 4 -8 years practical experience
Strong communication skills, flexible to changing schedules, self-motivated, self-starter who contributes to a positive work culture
Knowledgeable and skilled in construction/cabinet/mount-making techniques, painting, purchasing services or products from vendors, use of hand tools, power tools and applying various types of installation techniques
Knowledgeable in electrical systems and personal and electrical safety
Experienced in purchasing and inventory of fixtures, bulbs, and supplies
Willing to develop and maintain skills and to engage in professional development
Knowledgeable in specialized equipment such as bitmap and vector-based desk-top publishing software, large format printers, computerized vinyl plotters, laminating presses, and file preparation for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) production a plus
Skilled in fabrication and installation of graphic components meet high quality standards
Good record keeping and organizational skills
Capable working with heavy workloads, critical timing of installations and deadlines that require the ability to work quickly, use good judgement, problem solve and initiate action
Work independently without supervision
Knowledge of various preparation and installation techniques
Skilled in mold making and casting resins a plus
Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
Hourly Compensation Range Minimum:
